How to maintain and clean marble flooring?
Published on November 12, 2021.

Maintaining your marble flooring is not exactly as cumbersome as it’s alleged to be. Bearing a few pointers in mind can ensure your marble floor’s longevity and eternal beauty.

How to maintain and clean marble flooring?

Only use soft brooms or vacuum cleaners (such as those by Taski) to remove dust and dirt on the surface.

To get rid of any germs on the surface, use a diluted solution of a pH-neutral disinfectant to mop your marble flooring on a daily basis. While quality-processed marble won’t absorb any liquid, it is important to dry-mop the floors with – preferably – a micro-fibre cloth.

Drying the marble floors is important as the iron oxide in some types of marble may react with water to leave behind rust stains.

For higher traffic areas, use daily maintenance cleaners (such as by Bellinzoni) as per usage instructions.

How to remove stains on marble floor?

You hand-pick the perfect marble slabs to adorn your home, and only to stain it a few days after moving in. Can you imagine the horror? This wouldn’t be so bad if you opt for well-processed and treated marble slabs, but here are a few tips on removing stains and cleaning the marble floor.

It’s best to treat stains on marble floors as soon as you notice them. Here’s what you can do to restore the marble’s original colour and shine:

  • For spills, blot it up immediately with a soft cloth. Do not wipe or smear it, the stain may spread. Finally, flush the spot with some mild soap and water, and dry it with a soft cloth.
  • For set stains that may have escaped your notice, the treatment would differ according to the nature of the stain.
  • Organic substances like food, coffee, tea, or fruit are possibly the most common culprit on light-coloured marble. These can be cleaned with 6-12% hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia. Do not mix in any other cleaners as they may cause a toxic chemical reaction.
  • Many commercial stain removers are available nowadays which easily remove the blemishes from well-processed marble slabs. However, if your marble is of low quality or unprocessed, excessive use may leave it discoloured.

Can you use bleach on marble?

Excessive use of bleach on marble can cause irreparable damage. But if you must use bleach to clean your light coloured marble floor, make a 6% hydrogen peroxide or bleach solution with warm water. Use a sponge or soft cloth to apply this mild solution to the stained marble. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before wiping the spot with a clean cloth and rinse to remove any residue. Dry and reseal the stone for longevity.

Tips to maintain marble flooring

You can increase the life of your marble flooring by following a few simple tips:

  1. Use a quality sealant and re-apply it on a regular basis. We would suggest you re-seal your marble flooring every year or so, especially in high-traffic areas. Apply some marble polishing powder or crystallizer to retain the glossy finish.
  2. Avoid harsh chemicals and acid-based cleaners. Excessively acidic or alkaline chemicals like bleach or vinegar can etch (chemical burn) and dull your marble.
  3. Clean up spills that may cause the marble to stain immediately. Use mild soap or natural cleaning solution and water.
  4. Regularly clean the marble floors with a fresh, non-treated dust mop.
  5. If you have opted for a honed finish over diamond polish, use soft scrub or brush to clean the dust and dirt.
  6. Ensure you buff the marble flooring every two to four months, depending on the traffic.

How to clean marble wall?

Dust your marble wall cladding with a clean, soft cloth every day. For mild stains and splashes, wipe with a wet, clean cloth. For tougher stains, use a bleach-free cleaner and let it sit for not more than 5-10 minutes. Polished marble walls are fairly easier to maintain than other wall cladding materials.

Clean marble floors last longer.

Bless your marble flooring and countertops with a long life.

The stains, dust and dirt may cause marble flooring to lose their original lustre and colour. Keeping them tidy with a pH-neutral cleaner will ensure a long-lasting shine and vibrant colour.

Marble is a rare natural stone that ages with time. The slight stains, marks and patina tell a story and add to the character of your home. Embrace it, as a little bit of imperfection makes it perfect.
